Down can be used as both a mid-layer and outer layer

Due to their good breathability and high insulating ability, down jackets and down vests work well as a warm and comfortable mid-layer when you dress according to the 3-layer principle. And if you leave out the outermost, waterproof layer, you can easily wear the down jacket as an ordinary jacket – unless you are canoeing, climbing or doing something else where there is a risk that your jacket will get wet and scratched.

A down jacket works well as a summer jacket with a t-shirt underneath, just as a down vest is good when long sleeves become too warm. Because both take up minimal space in your hiking backpack, you can easily pack to make sure you stay warm all year round.
